The City’s potable (drinking) water needs are served by a network of water mains consisting of pipes made of cast iron, ductile iron and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The 100 miles of pipes distribute treated water from the Water Treatment Plant on Huntsville Avenue to the homes and businesses.
Water pressure is maintained through the use of elevated storage in three water towers at Sparks Avenue, Rollins Street and Wicker Street. These towers also allow for storage for fire protection, unexpected demand, or plant maintenance.
